The marijuana industry is constantly growing. Medical marijuana is now legal in more than 25 states. Some states have even legalized it for recreational use. It’s no secret that cannabis offers a multitude of benefits to its users, for a number of different health reasons. Because cannabis offers so many benefits, we must ask the question: Is cannabis the next superfood?

What is a Superfood?

Superfoods are considered “super” if they play a role in maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet. Foods including, but not limited to, whole grains, nuts, vegetables, fruits, salmon, etc. are often considered superfoods. This is because they are a great source of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. In other words, they offer numerous health benefits. If we go by this definition, cannabis is an excellent candidate to be considered a superfood.

What are the Health Benefits of Cannabis

Cannabis provides a wide range of benefits. It is an an excellent source of vitamins (specifically Vitamin E & Zinc), and other nutrients like essential fatty acids. Cannabis seeds are also surprisingly high in protein when compared to other seeds.

Cannabis treats illnesses such as cancer, glaucoma, and gastrointestinal issues. It alleviates symptoms of Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, epilepsy and many others. Cannabis has also been effective in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD and stress. Marijuana has the unique ability to decrease and possibly even end opioid addiction, as well. Many people use marijuana simply to help them sleep better or even to increase their appetite. Seeing as how marijuana can provide help to such a wide range of people with such a wide variety of illnesses and symptoms makes it difficult to argue that it is not a superfood.

How to Integrate this “Superfood” into Your Diet

Every part of the cannabis plant has something to offer. Many people believe that cannabis has to be eaten in sugary, nutrient deficient foods, like brownies or candies but this couldn’t be farther from the truth! A popular, healthy way to get your daily intake of this superfood is by putting a serving of the seeds or oils into a protein shake. You can put a couple raw leaves into a salad or use hemp oil in a salad dressing. Get creative! All of this evidence suggests that cannabis will be the next superfood!
