Medical Marijuana Initiative Continues to Grow

On Tuesday night, the medical marijuana initiative expanded a bit more, with two more states hopping on board! As each day passes, it seems as though more people are finally understanding the incredible, medical benefits that cannabis has to offer!

Missouri

Missouri became the 31st state to legalize medical marijuana. The amendment passed by a 66% vote. Under this new law, qualifying patients will receive identification cards that allow either them or their caregivers to grow up to 6 plants, and purchase at least 4 ounces from a dispensary on a monthly basis. Unlike other states, qualified physicians in Missouri can approve patients for any condition they see fit; there are no specified qualifying conditions.

Utah

Surprisingly enough, the conservative state of Utah became the 32nd state to legalize medical marijuana, late Tuesday night. While the details of this proposition are subject to compromise and change, patients granted a medical marijuana card will be allowed to purchase up to 2 ounces of medical marijuana or products containing 10 grams of CBD or THC from a dispensary during any two-week period. Patients (or designated caregivers) that live 100+ miles from a licensed dispensary, will be permitted to grow up to 6 plants at home. Under this new law, patients will not be allowed to smoke marijuana.

As stated above, these details are subject to change before the law goes into effect. Opponents to the proposition, want to keep at-home cultivation illegal and take edibles off of the table. As far as Utah goes, the details are still up in the air. The important thing, however, is that people from both sides have come together to push this integral legislation through!

Michigan

Michigan became the first midwestern state to legalize recreational pot, on Tuesday, and the 10th overall state to do so. The state of Michigan legalized medical marijuana way back in 2008. The new bill will allow adults 21 years and older, to purchase, possess, and use marijuana and marijuana-infused products. It will also allow said people to grow up to 12 plants for personal use. Each residence can have up to 10-ounces of marijuana at one time. Municipalities have the option to ban marijuana businesses.

North Dakota

Voters approved medical marijuana use back in 2016. Legislation for recreational marijuana, however, was struck-down by voters on Tuesday. 41% of voters supported the measure, while 59% did not. The new law would have been the most permissive law to date, by allowing no limit to the growth, possession, and consumption of marijuana.

While we can’t win them all, Tuesday was a huge success for the medical marijuana initiative in the grand scheme of things. More people will now have access to medical marijuana, than they did last week. That’s a win! Through education, we will continue to work towards a nation where medical marijuana is available to anyone who needs it!
