Any female will tell you that menstrual cramps are no fun, whatsoever. Some women get them a lot worse than others, pushing them to seek relief. As medical marijuana has become less taboo, more and more people are finding it helpful for treating a vast number of symptoms. While it has not yet been proven, there’s no reason to not consider relieving menstrual cramps with medical marijuana.

What are Menstrual Cramps?

Menstrual cramps can occur right before and during a woman’s menstrual cycle, each month. These cramps can vary from mild to severe. Some lucky women rarely ever experience these painful cramps, while others suffer for days.

Menstrual cramps occur as the Uterus contracts to shed its lining. The majority of the pain that is felt is a result of the Uterus contracting too strongly, which causes it to cut off blood supply to the Uterine Muscles. Severe pain and cramps often cause a woman to experience secondary symptoms such as nausea, lethargy, and irritability.

How can Cannabis Help Relieve these Symptoms?

If you’re familiar with the effects of cannabis, you may already understand why medical marijuana could very possibly, be a viable treatment option. Cannabis reduces inflammation and alleviates pain through its direct interaction with the receptors in the brain. Some studies suggest that a combination of THC and CBD have the greatest effect on pain relief. You may consider using a Sativa & Indica Hybrid.

We also know that cannabis has been an effective treatment for nausea, especially cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. It accomplishes this through its high concentration of antiemetic properties. Sativa (higher in THC) strains of marijuana can combat lethargy, by boosting one's energy level. These strains also improve your mood, thus treating irritability.

Trial Forms of Treatment

The FDA, has yet to approve any of the forms of treatment for Menstrual Cramps. This is not to say that they aren’t effective, however. There are a number of cannabis infused products on the market that are meant to treat period pain, including: drinks, balms, bath soaks and tinctures.

Another new product on the market is a tampon-like vaginal suppository that is infused with cannabis. This product has received quite a bit of good feedback, even though it has not been approved by the FDA.

It’s important to note that smoking marijuana and consuming edibles (like the drinks mentioned above) can also be an effective way to treat period symptoms.
