According to a survey by the Washington Post, as reported by the D.C.-based National Council for Aging Care, when asked about the benefits of medical cannabis, 90 percent of respondents reported positive results, with more than 2,300 of those being senior citizens. With a total of 7500 people questioned, seniors made up the largest group in the study by far.

Moreover, as the Council for Aging Care reported, senior cannabis use rose by 250 percent between 2006 to 2013. Those numbers are, quite frankly, astounding.

In fact, poll after poll supports the data that more and more senior citizens are exploring their options when it comes to medical cannabis. For example, over the past 15 years, older Americans approval ratings of the plant have jumped over 15 points, from 29 percent in 2005 to 45 percent today.

Anecdotally, seniors who use medical cannabis are found to be less apprehensive over the treatment, once they begin to realize all of its actual benefits.

As noted in our FAQ section, seniors seek out medical cannabis for a variety of reasons, from pain and discomfort to more common ailments related to aging such as rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. As research shows, cannabis is a natural anti-inflammatory which may provide older patients with a way to avoid having to take so many prescription drugs.

A Possible Alternative to Harmful, Expensive Prescription Medication

For many seniors, cannabis is more cost effective and safer than prescription drugs, especially for anyone who uses pain medication. And seniors know better than anyone, as they take more than 33 percent of all prescription medications on the market today.

At $3,000 per year, medical marijuana is quickly becoming the go-to alternative.

The numbers back this data up as well, as one study recently revealed that states with medical cannabis programs had a drop in the cost of prescriptions for Medicare patients.

And with numbers like that, older patients are turning to medical cannabis in droves.

“People in their 80s and 90s, even retired Air Force colonels, are finding such relief” with cannabis, one older woman told the New York Times. “Almost everybody I know is using it in one form or another, she continued.” According to the Times, that even included her husband.

The woman herself, a 66-year-old retiree smokes a little cannabis every night to help relax as well as to help with a few other issues. “I think relaxing is healthy for you.”

How Medical Cannabis Can Help Senior Citizens

A growing body of research shows that medical cannabis can help senior citizens with a variety of ailments. From nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients to general pain to joint pain and nerve damage, seniors across the country are finding relief in a myriad of ways.

Of course, at Marijuana Doctor, the expert team of physicians has just completed a rigorous review of the available research, resulting in an expanded list of qualifying conditions for people of all ages. The list now includes such ailments as ALS, anorexia, anxiety, cancer, chemotherapy side effects, chronic pain, Crohn’s disease, and depression just to name a few.

It’s been almost two years since Florida passed Constitutional Amendment 2, allowing patients with certain debilitating diseases and other ailments the right to seek treatment with medical cannabis (with a physician’s recommendation, of course). And in that time, hundreds of thousands of people have found relief under the law — 136,000 new patients signed up to receive treatment with medical cannabis in the first nine months of 2018 alone.

When first enacted, however, the law, while giving a somewhat strict definition of which conditions qualified a patient to receive medical cannabis treatment, did leave some leeway for doctors to make their own decisions, based on a defined set of criteria.

Well, here at Marijuana Doctor, patients are our top priority. We’re always looking for new and better ways to offer treatment to as many people as possible, based on the scientific method and top patient outcomes.

With that in mind, we’re pleased to announce that after a rigorous review of the research, Marijuana Doctor physicians are now recommending several new conditions to our list of qualifying conditions for smoking and all other forms of medical cannabis use.

A Brief Review of the Law

In January 2017, when state legislators passed Amendment 2, they included a specific list of qualifying conditions which would be eligible for medical cannabis treatment. Those conditions were:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS / Lou Gehrig’s disease)
  • Cancer
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV / AIDS
  • Seizures
  • Chronic muscle spasms
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

However, legislators did show some forward-thinking when they passed the final version of the law as well, adding in one final caveat to the list of qualifying conditions that gave doctors and physicians the leeway to do what they do best — treat patients.

The final qualifying condition was listed as any ailment/condition “of the same severity/symptoms.” In other words, the law states that any medical condition in which medical cannabis is deemed useful for the patient, and in which the benefits outweigh any side effects will be considered a qualifying condition.

A New List of Qualifying Conditions

After a rigorous review of the research available, the physicians at Marijuana Doctor have added a number of qualifying conditions to the list of treatable ailments for which medical cannabis will be recommended. Thos conditions now include:

  • ALS
  • Anorexia
  • Anxiety
  • Cancer
  • Chemotherapy side effects
  • Chronic pain
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Migraines
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Nausea
  • Neuropathy
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • PTSD
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Spasticity
  • Tourette’s

And as always, if you’re condition isn’t on the list, come by and talk to us anyway. If you don’t qualify, you don’t pay! At Marijuana Doctor, we’re here to help you navigate the entire process from beginning to end. Our board-certified physicians will evaluate you to determine if you may benefit from medical marijuana.

And after you’ve received your recommendation, we’ll help you with the registration process with the Florida Department of Health as well. Best of all, our process is risk-free with a 100 percent money-back guarantee. If you don’t qualify, you don’t pay.

Any female will tell you that menstrual cramps are no fun, whatsoever. Some women get them a lot worse than others, pushing them to seek relief. As medical marijuana has become less taboo, more and more people are finding it helpful for treating a vast number of symptoms. While it has not yet been proven, there’s no reason to not consider relieving menstrual cramps with medical marijuana.

What are Menstrual Cramps?

Menstrual cramps can occur right before and during a woman’s menstrual cycle, each month. These cramps can vary from mild to severe. Some lucky women rarely ever experience these painful cramps, while others suffer for days.

Menstrual cramps occur as the Uterus contracts to shed its lining. The majority of the pain that is felt is a result of the Uterus contracting too strongly, which causes it to cut off blood supply to the Uterine Muscles. Severe pain and cramps often cause a woman to experience secondary symptoms such as nausea, lethargy, and irritability.

How can Cannabis Help Relieve these Symptoms?

If you’re familiar with the effects of cannabis, you may already understand why medical marijuana could very possibly, be a viable treatment option. Cannabis reduces inflammation and alleviates pain through its direct interaction with the receptors in the brain. Some studies suggest that a combination of THC and CBD have the greatest effect on pain relief. You may consider using a Sativa & Indica Hybrid.

We also know that cannabis has been an effective treatment for nausea, especially cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation. It accomplishes this through its high concentration of antiemetic properties. Sativa (higher in THC) strains of marijuana can combat lethargy, by boosting one’s energy level. These strains also improve your mood, thus treating irritability.

Trial Forms of Treatment

The FDA, has yet to approve any of the forms of treatment for Menstrual Cramps. This is not to say that they aren’t effective, however. There are a number of cannabis infused products on the market that are meant to treat period pain, including: drinks, balms, bath soaks and tinctures.

Another new product on the market is a tampon-like vaginal suppository that is infused with cannabis. This product has received quite a bit of good feedback, even though it has not been approved by the FDA.

It’s important to note that smoking marijuana and consuming edibles (like the drinks mentioned above) can also be an effective way to treat period symptoms.
